OL KALOU, Kenya- The Kenya Kwanza administration has intensified development projects and campaign activities in Ol Kalou Constituency ahead of the July 16 parliamentary by-election, in what is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched political contests before the 2027 General Election.
The seat fell vacant following the death of former MP David Kiaraho, with the race widely viewed as a key test of political influence between President William Ruto’s ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
UDA has fielded Samuel Muchina Nyagah, a former aide to the late MP, while DCP is backing former Karau MCA Sammy Kamau Ngotho, who won the party nomination with 12,957 votes.
In recent weeks, senior government officials and UDA leaders have campaigned extensively across the constituency, launching and inspecting development projects while promising more government investment if residents elect the ruling party’s candidate.
Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries and other national leaders have held rallies in the constituency, presenting UDA as the best vehicle for delivering development because of its links to the national government.
Campaign activities have also featured the distribution of items to residents, including shoes, bedding and other household goods at some events, as both camps intensify efforts to win over voters.
Social media posts have shown reports of mattresses being distributed during campaign activities, although the extent of the programme has not been independently verified.
The by-election has attracted national attention because it is seen as an early measure of Gachagua’s political influence in the Mount Kenya region following his split with President Ruto.
Unlike UDA’s well-funded campaign backed by senior government figures, DCP has sought to portray itself as a grassroots movement.
This week, supporters organised a symbolic fundraiser in which residents contributed Sh10 each to buy candidate Sammy Ngotho a suit, a move party leaders said demonstrated ordinary wananchi were financing the campaign.
The UDA campaign has also received a boost after Paul Waiganjo, who finished second in the DCP nominations, defected to the ruling party and endorsed Samuel Muchina’s bid, citing dissatisfaction with the DCP nomination process.
Political analysts say the Ol Kalou by-election has evolved beyond a local contest into a proxy battle between the Kenya Kwanza administration and Gachagua’s emerging political outfit, with the outcome expected to influence political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has scheduled the by-election for July 16, 2026.
