BONDO, Siaya County — Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has taken his grassroots mobilisation drive to Bondo, Siaya County, as opposition leaders intensify efforts to consolidate support in Nyanza ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo arrived in Bondo on Sunday, September 27, for a church service and a subsequent “Meet the People” tour as he promotes the newly rebranded Ukombozi Alliance.
The visit comes as the former Azimio coalition seeks to build a broader opposition platform ahead of the 2027 polls. Kalonzo’s itinerary includes engagements in Western and Nyanza as part of the alliance’s mobilisation efforts.
Kalonzo Invokes Raila’s Legacy in Bondo
Kalonzo announced his arrival in Bondo in a post on X, referring to the town as the home of his late political ally and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“Today we are in Bondo, Baba’s home. We come home with great strength,” Kalonzo said.
He was scheduled to attend a service at St Michael’s All Angels Cathedral Church before proceeding with the Meet the People tour.
Wiper Steps Up Nyanza Mobilisation
The visit follows Kalonzo’s engagements in Busia County on Saturday, forming part of a wider mobilisation programme covering Western and Nyanza.
Wiper has been positioning the tour as part of its effort to expand its grassroots presence ahead of the 2027 election.
The party’s official platform currently identifies Kalonzo as its party leader and is also registering aspirants for the 2027 General Election.
The Nyanza campaign comes days after the former Azimio coalition formally adopted the Ukombozi Alliance name, with Kalonzo among the leaders promoting the rebranded opposition platform.
Kalonzo Highlights Raila Partnership
Kalonzo has continued to emphasise his long political association with Raila as he seeks to broaden his appeal beyond his traditional political base in Eastern Kenya.
The two worked together in the 2013 and 2017 presidential elections, while Kalonzo remained part of the opposition arrangement surrounding the 2022 election.
During his recent Western Kenya engagements, Kalonzo has continued invoking the partnership and Raila’s political legacy.
He has also backed former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s claim that Raila won the 2022 presidential election, although that assertion conflicts with the official election result and the Supreme Court’s determination.
2022 Election Result Remains Settled in Law
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared William Ruto the winner of the 2022 presidential election with 7,176,141 votes, or 50.49 per cent, against Raila Odinga’s 6,942,930 votes, or 48.85 per cent.
The Supreme Court subsequently unanimously upheld the result after considering petitions challenging the election. The court found that the declared winner had attained the constitutional threshold required for election as president.
Kalonzo’s statements about the 2022 election are therefore a political interpretation rather than a change to the legally declared result.
Ukombozi Alliance Seeks Opposition Unity
Kalonzo’s Bondo tour comes as opposition parties continue consultations over how to organise themselves for the 2027 election.
The rebranding of Azimio as the Ukombozi Alliance is part of efforts by its leaders to present a unified opposition platform.
Kalonzo has said opposition parties should work together despite disagreements over political vehicles and leadership.
