NAIROBI, Kenya — Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has written to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV ahead of his maiden apostolic visit to Africa as the 267th Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church.
In the message, Kalonzo extended a warm and reverent welcome to the Pope, describing the visit as significant for a continent deeply rooted in faith and resilience.
“On behalf of the Wiper Patriotic Front, and on my own behalf, I extend to you a most cordial and reverent welcome to the African continent on your maiden apostolic journey as the 267th Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church,” the statement read.
He described Africa as a continent rich in spiritual heritage and hope, noting that the Pope’s presence carries deep meaning for millions across the region.
“Africa, a continent of ancient faith, extraordinary resilience, and boundless hope, receives you with profound joy and deep spiritual solidarity,” Kalonzo said.
Quoting a traditional Christian expression, he added, “Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est — Where charity and love are found, there is God,” saying the Pope’s visit reflects those values.
While acknowledging that the current itinerary does not include Kenya, Kalonzo expressed optimism about a future visit, pointing to the country’s longstanding ties with the Holy See.
The visit includes stops in Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea.
“Though your present pastoral itinerary does not bring you to Kenyan soil, we acknowledge that Kenya holds a place of enduring warmth for the Holy See, and we trust in the providence of God that the day shall come when we are once again privileged to receive you as our most honoured guest,” the statement said.
He also praised the Pope’s advocacy for peace, human dignity and the importance of the family in society.
Kalonzo concluded by appealing for prayers for Kenya, particularly for peace and leadership guided by the common good.
“I humbly beseech Your Holiness to intercede in prayer on our behalf, that Kenya may be blessed with lasting peace, social harmony, and leaders who govern not for themselves, but for the common good of all our people,” he said.
He affirmed solidarity with the pontiff, adding, “We walk with you in prayer and in solidarity.”
