NAIROBI, Kenya- The Catholic Diocese of Maralal has suspended seven priests over what it described as alleged violations of their priestly obligations and ecclesiastical discipline, in one of the most significant disciplinary actions taken by a Catholic diocese in Kenya in recent years.
The suspensions were announced by the Bishop of Maralal, Hieronymus Emusugut Joya, who also unveiled a series of new accountability measures aimed at strengthening clergy discipline and restoring confidence within the diocese.
According to the diocese, the decision followed concerns over what it termed abuse of ecclesiastical responsibilities by the affected priests.
However, church authorities did not publicly disclose the specific allegations against each of the suspended clerics.
The bishop said the suspensions are intended to safeguard the integrity of the priesthood while allowing the church to address the issues through established canonical procedures.
New accountability measures
Alongside the suspensions, the Diocese of Maralal announced reforms designed to improve oversight and accountability among clergy.
The measures include tighter supervision of priests, strengthened administrative procedures and renewed emphasis on adherence to Church law and pastoral responsibilities.
Church leaders said the changes are aimed at promoting transparency, responsible leadership and greater accountability within the diocese.
Priests barred from ministry
During the suspension period, the affected priests will not be permitted to publicly celebrate Mass, administer sacraments or exercise priestly ministry until the disciplinary process is concluded, in accordance with Catholic Church procedures.
The diocese indicated that the suspensions are precautionary administrative measures and that the canonical process will determine the appropriate outcome in each case.
The Diocese of Maralal appealed to Catholics to remain prayerful and united during the disciplinary process, urging the faithful not to engage in speculation while the church addresses the matter internally.
The bishop reaffirmed the diocese’s commitment to accountability, pastoral care and the faithful observance of Church law.
The announcement comes at a time when the Catholic Church has increasingly emphasized stronger governance and accountability within its institutions, with dioceses across the world adopting stricter measures to address misconduct and reinforce ecclesiastical discipline.
