NTSA Warns Motorists Against Speeding in School Zones Ahead of Reopening

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has renewed its warning to motorists to slow down and exercise heightened caution around schools, cautioning that reckless driving in school zones continues to endanger the lives of children.

In a public safety advisory issued ahead of the reopening of schools, the authority urged drivers to remain alert and reduce speed when approaching areas where schoolchildren are present.

“Be mindful and slow down in school zones,” NTSA said, emphasising that such areas are shared spaces where children walk, cross roads and gather, often during peak traffic hours.

The warning is anchored on the widely recognised road sign depicting children crossing, a symbol meant to prompt drivers to exercise patience, responsibility and vigilance behind the wheel.

NTSA noted that school zones require extra care due to increased pedestrian movement, particularly during morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-up times.

Drivers were urged to adjust their speed and remain attentive to avoid preventable accidents.

Beyond caution, the authority is also calling on the public to play an active role in promoting road safety.

Motorists and pedestrians have been encouraged to report dangerous driving behaviour by submitting photos or videos of reckless motorists to NTSA’s official social media platforms.

“Report reckless drivers,” the advisory reads, positioning the public as key partners in enforcing road safety and strengthening accountability among road users.

The latest warning comes just days after a December 30, 2025 advisory in which NTSA urged all road users to take extra precautions ahead of the busy back-to-school period, when thousands of learners are expected to return to classrooms across the country.

In that earlier communication, the authority stressed that safeguarding children on the roads is a shared responsibility involving private motorists, public transport operators, school administrators, parents and guardians.

NTSA advised road users to strictly comply with traffic regulations, plan journeys in advance and avoid night travel due to reduced visibility.

Parents and guardians were also cautioned against allowing children to board non-compliant vehicles.

As schools prepare to reopen, NTSA reiterated that slowing down, staying alert and respecting traffic rules could mean the difference between safety and tragedy for young commuters.
