NAIROBI, Kenya- A section of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmakers has thrown its weight behind Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya as their preferred choice to deputise President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
The lawmakers have intensified calls for Oparanya to be considered for the Deputy President position, arguing that his political experience and influence in Western Kenya make him a strong candidate for the role.
“Oparanya shall be our candidate for Running Mate,” Suna East MP Junet Mohamed said.
The push places Oparanya at the centre of growing political discussions around President Ruto’s running mate as parties and allies begin shaping their strategies ahead of the 2027 polls.
Oparanya, a former Kakamega Governor and long-serving ODM politician, is currently serving in President Ruto’s Cabinet following the political cooperation between ODM and the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Supporters of his candidature argue that picking Oparanya could strengthen Ruto’s support in Western Kenya, a region that has historically played a significant role in presidential contests.
The renewed calls come amid broader debate within the ruling coalition over who should accompany President Ruto in his re-election bid.
Other names have also featured in discussions, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who has emerged as a preferred choice among some supporters in opinion polling.
Oparanya has previously downplayed calls for him to become Ruto’s running mate, saying he was focused on serving in his Cabinet role and that the calls were the wishes of other leaders.
“I’m comfortable at the moment serving as Cabinet Secretary, but I can’t stop their wishes,” Oparanya said previously when asked about the push.
The push by ODM lawmakers comes as political formations continue realigning ahead of 2027, with Western Kenya emerging as a key battleground in the contest for national influence.
The debate over Ruto’s running mate is expected to intensify as parties negotiate alliances, balance regional interests and seek candidates capable of broadening their electoral support base.
