VIHIGA, Kenya – The government has warned boda boda operators against being drawn into political violence and criminal activities, saying those who engage in goonism or intimidation will face the full force of the law.

Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo said politicians and criminal elements have increasingly targeted unemployed youth in the boda boda sector to instigate chaos, disrupt meetings and attack opponents.

Speaking during a consultative meeting with boda boda operators and sector leaders in Vihiga County, Omollo said the state will not tolerate politically instigated violence or the misuse of riders to undermine public order.

“No political interest is worth risking your life, your livelihood or your future. Support your preferred leaders peacefully, but do not allow yourself to be used to commit acts of violence,” Omollo said.

The PS noted that while the boda boda sector remains one of Kenya’s most important economic lifelines, a small number of rogue operators have occasionally tarnished its image by participating in criminal activities.

He emphasized that the vast majority of riders are law-abiding citizens who play a critical role in the economy by providing affordable last-mile transport and linking communities to markets, schools and health facilities.

Omollo called on boda boda leaders to work closely with security agencies, chiefs, assistant chiefs and other National Government Administrative Officers to identify and isolate criminal elements seeking to infiltrate the sector.

He said stronger collaboration and information-sharing between riders and security agencies would help prevent crime, improve safety and protect the reputation of the industry.

The PS also commended boda boda operators for supporting community policing and security efforts, noting that their widespread presence across villages and trading centres makes them valuable partners in maintaining public safety.

Beyond security, Omollo urged riders to take advantage of government programmes aimed at improving livelihoods, including registration under the Social Health Authority (SHA), investments in education and infrastructure, and initiatives to modernise the sector.

He highlighted ongoing efforts to promote electric motorcycles and affordable financing models, saying the move is expected to lower operating costs, increase earnings and reduce environmental impact.

Omollo said sustainable development can only thrive in an environment of peace and stability, urging wananchi to reject violence and focus on productive economic activities.

The meeting brought together boda boda leaders, security officials, National Government Administrative Officers and other stakeholders from across Vihiga County.
