NAIROBI, Kenya- The family of slain gospel singer Rachel Wandeto was forced to symbolically bury a banana stem after a dispute emerged over where she should be laid to rest following her death from severe burn injuries sustained in a brutal petrol attack.
Reports indicate tensions arose between the families involved, leading to emotional scenes during burial preparations as relatives sought a resolution over the final rites.
Wandeto died on May 18 while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital after suffering about 70 per cent burns during an attack by unknown assailants in Mwiki, Nairobi.
Investigators said she had been accosted by masked men who allegedly demanded money and benefits they claimed she received because of her public support for President William Ruto before setting her ablaze.
The attack sparked national outrage and renewed debate over political intolerance and violence targeting individuals perceived to support rival political camps.
Family members have continued demanding justice, urging investigators to move swiftly and arrest those responsible for the killing.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen previously condemned the attack and directed police to expedite investigations into the incident.
Wandeto had gained public attention earlier this year after tattooing President William Ruto’s image on her body alongside pro-government slogans, a move that attracted widespread reactions online.
Her death has continued to generate emotional reactions across the country, with human rights groups and political leaders calling for justice and an end to politically linked violence against women.
