NAIROBI, Kenya- A section of Kenyans on social media has criticised President William Ruto after he appeared with a convoy of more than 30 vehicles in the Coast region while urging citizens to prepare for difficult economic times caused by rising fuel prices.
The backlash erupted online shortly after images and videos of the extensive motorcade circulated, with many users accusing the government of hypocrisy over its austerity message.
Critics argued that while ordinary Kenyans are being asked to tighten their belts amid soaring fuel and living costs, senior government officials continue to display extravagance funded by taxpayers.
Others used the phrase “preaching water and drinking wine” to describe what they termed as a disconnect between government messaging and the lifestyle displayed by top leaders.
The outrage comes as the country continues to grapple with increased fuel prices that have triggered protests, transport disruptions and widespread public frustration over the rising cost of living.
The criticism comes at a time when Kenyans are struggling with the high cost of living driven by increased fuel prices, expensive food commodities, high electricity bills and rising transport costs.
The recent spike in fuel prices has already triggered protests and a nationwide matatu strike in some areas, with transport operators warning that the burden is becoming unbearable for both businesses and households.
Economists have warned that higher fuel prices are likely to push up the cost of basic commodities further since transport costs directly affect the prices of food and essential goods across the country.
Supporters of the President, however, defended the convoy, arguing that presidential security protocols and logistics often require multiple vehicles during official tours and public engagements.
