Ruto Explains Why Kenya Fuel Prices Differ From Uganda, Tanzania

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya-President William Ruto has defended the variation in fuel prices between Kenya and its regional neighbours, attributing the difference to the country’s economic classification.

Speaking on the matter, the Head of State said Kenya is categorized as a middle-income country, unlike several of its neighbours which fall under least developed countries.

“I know many people in Kenya keep asking why is it that sometimes the prices of fuel are different in Kenya from our neighbours. Kenya is a middle-income country. Our neighbours are least developed countries. There is a big difference,” Ruto said.

He added that any fair comparison on fuel pricing should be made between Kenya and other economies within the same income bracket.

“If you want to compare Kenya fairly with others, compare Kenya with other middle-income countries,” he stated.

Kenya has in recent months faced public scrutiny over the cost of fuel, with consumers raising concerns about pricing disparities within the East African region.
