NAIROBI, Kenya — Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has paid tribute to Zambia’s late President Edgar Lungu, describing him as a man of humility, wisdom, and unwavering faith, who led his nation with honour and dedication.

In a statement posted on X, Uhuru mourned Lungu not just as a fellow statesman but as a trusted friend, recalling shared moments during Lungu’s visits to Kenya and conversations about Africa’s future.

“President Lungu was not only a distinguished statesman who served his country with dedication and honour but also a man of humility, wisdom, and unwavering faith,” Uhuru said.

He praised Lungu’s commitment to national unity and prosperity, noting that his calm and measured leadership would be remembered by all who worked with him.

“His commitment to the prosperity and unity of Zambia was evident throughout his presidency,” Uhuru added.

Lungu passed away on Thursday, June 5, at the age of 68. While the exact cause of death has not been disclosed, it is understood he had been undergoing treatment in recent weeks.

Lungu served as Zambia’s sixth president from 2015 to 2021.

He initially took office following the death of President Michael Sata and later won a full term in the 2016 general election.

He stepped down after losing to current President Hakainde Hichilema in 2021 but returned to active politics in 2023, aligning himself with the opposition.

Uhuru extended his condolences to Lungu’s widow, Mama Esther Lungu, their children, and the people of Zambia.

“My thoughts and prayers are with his beloved wife, Mama Esther Lungu, their children, and the people of Zambia during this difficult time,” he said.
