Kenyan Leaders Unite in Condolences After Tragic Endarasha School Fire Claims 17 Lives

NAIROBI, Kenya- A heartbreaking tragedy has struck the Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County, where a devastating fire claimed the lives of at least 17 students. 

The incident, which left the entire nation in shock, prompted swift responses from Kenya’s leadership, with President William Ruto, his deputy Rigathi Gachagua, and former Prime minister Raila Odinga leading the nation in sending their heartfelt condolences.

In a message that resonated with the grief-stricken nation, President William Ruto expressed his sorrow over the fire and vowed that the government would act quickly to investigate the cause of the tragedy. 

“Our thoughts are with the families of the children who lost their lives in the fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy. This is devastating news. We pray for a speedy recovery for the survivors,” the president said, underscoring the urgency of ensuring accountability for this tragic incident.

President Ruto also instructed relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the cause of the fire, ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice. 

His deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, echoed this sentiment while emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety protocols. “We ask schools to enforce security measures as outlined by the Ministry of Education to avert such incidents in the future,” Gachagua urged.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta was among the prominent figures who conveyed their condolences, expressing deep regret over the loss of so many young lives. 

“The loss of young lives, full of potential and hope for the future, is a pain that cannot be fully described. My heart goes out to the families who lost their children and the school community deeply affected by this tragedy,” Kenyatta said, capturing the profound grief felt across the nation.

Raila Odinga also extended his heartfelt sympathies to the grieving families and wished a quick recovery to those injured. 

“May God grant the families strength during these difficult moments and swift healing to the survivors,” Odinga noted. 

Reports indicate that 14 students were hospitalized with severe burns, adding to the already overwhelming toll of the fire.

Second Lady Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, known for her compassionate outreach, shared her own message, calling the tragedy “unbearable” and expressing her sorrow for the families enduring such a profound loss.

National Police Service Spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed that police teams had been dispatched to assist in rescue operations as investigations continue. 

Leaders and citizens alike are united in their grief, with many hoping this incident will lead to meaningful reforms in school safety protocols.
