NAIROBI, Kenya – Zipporah Kinya, a Meru Member of the County Assembly (MCA) and Deputy Majority Leader, has been summoned by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party regarding her latest impeachment motion against Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
The call for her presence at the party headquarters is set for Monday, July 22, 2024, as confirmed by a letter signed by acting party Secretary General Cleophas Malala.
The UDA party’s summons comes in the wake of escalating tensions within Meru County’s political landscape.
Kinya has been requested to appear for preliminary discussions, aimed at addressing the issues surrounding the impeachment motion and to align on the party’s strategic direction.
“To discuss this matter further and align on the way forward, you are requested to report to the party headquarters on Monday, July 22, 2024, for preliminary discussions on the issue,” the letter states.
Cleophas Malala, acting Secretary General of the UDA, emphasized the need for unity and stability within the party.
He urged Kinya to consider withdrawing the impeachment motion to maintain party cohesion amidst the current socio-political climate in the country.
Malala’s letter highlights the importance of demonstrating unity and strategic foresight during these politically charged times.
He also noted that a party leadership meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, where the matter will be discussed extensively.
“Your presence and insights at these meetings will be crucial for our collective strategy and decision-making process,” the letter further reads.
Kinya’s impeachment motion against Governor Mwangaza, tabled last Wednesday, marks the third attempt to remove the governor from office.
The motion accuses the governor of gross violations of the Constitution, breaches of various national and county laws, and abuse of office.
The allegations are backed by public petitions and statements from county assembly members.
“Public petitions have been presented to the county assembly, including petition No. 5 of 2023 brought by 1,611 members of the public,” Kinya stated, detailing the grounds for the impeachment.
Despite multiple reconciliation efforts, Kinya insists that Governor Mwangaza’s continued tenure has hindered the efficient delivery of services and brought disrepute to various county offices.
