GARISSA, Kenya- A multi-agency security operation has foiled a suspected terror mission after officers arrested a terror suspect and recovered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along the busy Garissa–Dadaab Road.
According to security agencies, the suspect, identified as Hussein Issa Baraki, was intercepted during a routine patrol at the Haji Aden area in Garissa County.
Authorities said the suspect immediately raised suspicion after officers spotted him standing by the roadside under unclear circumstances.
The situation quickly escalated when Baraki allegedly took off into a nearby bush upon noticing the approaching security team.
What followed was a dramatic chase through thick bushes before officers eventually cornered and arrested him.
Security officers later escorted the suspect back to the exact spot where he had initially been standing before fleeing.
It was at the scene that officers recovered an Improvised Explosive Device, heightening fears that a planned terror attack may have been in the making.
Detectives also recovered military-style jungle attire, including a jungle jacket and matching trousers, as well as two mobile phones believed to be linked to the suspect.
The recovered items were seized as exhibits as investigators launched further forensic analysis and intelligence investigations.
The suspect was escorted to Garissa Police Station where he remains in custody undergoing processing ahead of arraignment.
Security agencies have since intensified investigations to determine whether the suspect was acting alone or was part of a wider terror network operating within the region.
The Garissa–Dadaab corridor remains one of the areas under heightened surveillance due to previous terror-related incidents and proximity to Kenya’s border with Somalia.
Authorities said the latest operation underscores the continued vigilance of Kenyan security agencies in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
Security officials also appealed to members of the public to continue sharing timely information that could help prevent criminal and terror-related activities.
Kenya has in recent years stepped up counterterrorism operations, particularly in northeastern counties, amid persistent threats linked to extremist groups operating within the region.
The discovery of the IED is expected to trigger further security operations and intelligence-led investigations in Garissa and surrounding areas.
