Summary
- Donald Trump says the US could seize Iran’s key oil hub, Kharg Island
- The island handles about 90 pc of Iran’s crude exports, making it an economic lifeline
- Iran warns of retaliation, raising fears of wider regional conflict
NAIROBI, Kenya- Donald Trump has said the United States could “easily” seize Kharg Island, a critical oil hub off the coast of Iran, escalating tensions in an already volatile region.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump suggested the move could happen quickly, even as he hinted that a peace deal remains possible.
Why Kharg Island is at the centre of US-Iran tensions
Kharg Island is not just another outpost.
It is the backbone of Iran’s oil exports, handling roughly 90 pc of the country’s crude shipments.
Targeting it would effectively choke Iran’s economy and cut off a key revenue stream for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Analysts say controlling the island could also give the US a strategic launch point for further military operations.
The location is just 24km off Iran’s coast, but its impact stretches globally due to its role in energy supply chains.
Military plans and rising threats on both sides
Reports indicate the US has considered options including occupying or blockading the island to pressure Iran.
According to sources cited by Axios and CBS, preparations could involve deploying Marines and naval assets to the region.
A White House official said the US military could act “at any time,” although no final decision has been announced.
On March 13, US forces reportedly struck military targets on the island but avoided oil infrastructure.
The United States Central Command said over 90 Iranian military sites were hit.
Iran, however, says its oil exports remain uninterrupted.
Iran warns of retaliation as global risks grow
Iran has issued strong warnings, saying any attack on its energy infrastructure would trigger immediate retaliation.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned of “relentless” attacks on regional infrastructure supporting US operations.
Military officials have also threatened to target shipping routes, including the critical Strait of Hormuz.
The waterway is one of the world’s most important النفط corridors, making any disruption a global concern.
Iran has already reinforced Kharg Island with air defences and mines, signaling readiness for escalation.
Experts warn that a direct strike on oil facilities could send global prices soaring and widen the conflict across the Middle East.
