Kalonzo Tells Ruto to Prepare for Possible 2027 Defeat as Political Rhetoric Heats Up

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has urged President William Ruto to prepare for the possibility of losing the 2027 General Election, in remarks that signal escalating political contestation ahead of the next polls.

Speaking during an interview on Sunday, Kalonzo said Kenya’s democratic history shows that even powerful leaders can lose elections and must be ready to concede defeat in the interest of national stability.

“I have to encourage William Ruto to begin to socialise himself to the possibility of an election loss; he will not be the first one,” Kalonzo said.

He pointed to the 2002 transition, when former President Daniel Arap Moi accepted the defeat of his preferred candidate and oversaw a peaceful transfer of power to Mwai Kibaki.

He also referenced former President Uhuru Kenyatta, noting that Kenya has built a tradition of leaders conceding electoral outcomes.

Kalonzo, who has declared interest in the presidency, argued that President Ruto’s political posture suggests reluctance to contemplate defeat, warning that such perceptions could undermine democratic norms.

“We want William Ruto to prepare himself to accept [defeat]… so that we have a tradition of leaders accepting loss,” he said, adding that the next election would be highly consequential.

The Wiper leader described the 2027 vote as a “revolutionary election,” framing it as a defining moment for the country’s political and governance trajectory. He called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to guarantee a free, fair, and credible process.

“2027 is not a normal election; it is going to be a revolutionary election… you cannot afford to play with the future of this country,” he said.

Kalonzo’s remarks come against the backdrop of confident assertions by President Ruto, who recently dismissed the opposition as lacking a coherent agenda and predicted an early and decisive victory.

“Those people in opposition have decided that their agenda is William Ruto… I will defeat them very early in the morning,” Ruto said in remarks earlier this month.

Under Article 81 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, Kenya’s electoral system must be free, fair, transparent, and administered in an impartial, neutral, efficient, accurate, and accountable manner.
