MOMBASA, Kenya – The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has launched an investigation into an operational incident involving a Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) crane at the Port of Mombasa.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, prompting an immediate response from KPA’s safety and emergency teams.
KPA said no fatalities or serious injuries were reported following the incident.
The Authority’s statement came after videos circulated on social media showing several shipping containers stacked at the port, with one container appearing severely damaged.
RTG Crane Incident at Mombasa Port
According to KPA, the incident involved an RTG crane and a truck tractor operator at the port.
The truck tractor operator was not injured, while the RTG operator sustained minor soft-tissue injuries to his legs.
The injured operator was taken to hospital for medical evaluation as a precaution.
KPA said he received treatment and was subsequently discharged after being cleared by the attending medical team.
KPA Safety Teams Responded Immediately
The Authority said its safety and emergency response teams attended the incident shortly after it occurred.
KPA has not disclosed further operational details about what led to the incident, saying investigations are still underway.
The probe is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine its cause.
Extent of Container Damage Not Confirmed
While images and videos circulating online appeared to show damaged containers, KPA did not confirm the extent of any damage to containers or other port property.
The Authority also did not provide an assessment of potential financial or operational losses.
KPA said the investigation would establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Authority cautioned against drawing conclusions before the inquiry is completed.
