Search Intensifies for Missing Aid Boats En Route to Cuba

Date:

Summary

  • Two sailboats carrying aid from Mexico to Cuba have gone missing.
  • Nine crew members from multiple countries are unaccounted for.
  • Mexico has launched a full search-and-rescue operation.

NAIROBI, Kenya- A major search and rescue operation is underway in the Caribbean after two sailboats carrying humanitarian aid from Mexico to Cuba went missing.

The vessels, identified as Friendship and Tigger Moth, were expected to arrive in Havana earlier this week but have failed to make contact.

Search launched after boats lose contact

According to Mexico’s navy, the boats departed Isla Mujeres in Quintana Roo on March 20, carrying humanitarian supplies and at least nine crew members of different nationalities.

When the vessels failed to arrive between March 24 and 25, authorities activated a search-and-rescue operation.

Naval units and aircraft have been deployed along the estimated route, while Mexico is coordinating with international maritime rescue centres and diplomatic missions from the crew’s home countries.

Officials say there has been no communication or confirmed sighting of the boats so far.

Aid mission linked to Cuba’s ongoing crisis

The missing vessels were part of a broader humanitarian convoy delivering food, medicine, and essential supplies to Cuba.

The country has been facing severe shortages and prolonged blackouts amid ongoing economic challenges and tightening U.S. restrictions.

Despite the disappearance, organisers say the crews are experienced and the boats were equipped with safety and signalling systems.

“We remain confident in the crews’ ability to reach Havana safely,” a convoy spokesperson said.

Growing concern as search continues

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the disappearance, though weather conditions and sea currents are being considered.

Mexico’s navy has urged vessels operating in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico to report any sightings that could assist in the search.

The situation has drawn international attention, with multiple governments now involved in efforts to locate the missing boats and ensure the safety of those on board.
