JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — South African police have launched a manhunt for eight unidentified gunmen after 17 people were killed and 15 others wounded in a shooting at a tavern in Wedela, west of Johannesburg.
The attack happened on Saturday evening in Extension 3, Wedela, in the West Rand District.
Police said the gunmen opened fire on patrons drinking outside the tavern before entering the establishment and continuing to shoot at people inside.
Gunmen Armed With AK-47 Rifles
According to the South African Police Service, the attackers were reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols.
Emergency medical services declared all 17 victims dead at the scene, while 15 people who suffered gunshot wounds were taken to medical facilities for treatment.
Police have not identified the victims.
Attackers Fled After Shooting
Police said the suspects fled the scene after the shooting.
Local reports said the attackers allegedly searched some patrons and took their mobile phones before escaping in two unidentified vehicles. Two vehicles were also reportedly set on fire during the incident.
No arrests had been made by Sunday as detectives and specialised police units worked to identify and track down the suspects.
Motive Remains Unknown
Authorities have not established a motive for the shooting.
Police have opened investigations into 17 counts of murder and 15 counts of attempted murder, while damage to property is also being investigated.
The identities of the attackers and the circumstances that led to the shooting remain under investigation.
Police Appeal for Information
Gauteng police have mobilised detectives and specialised units to pursue the suspects.
