DALLAS, US — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has predicted that one of the principals in Kenya’s United Opposition will leave the coalition before the 2027 General Election, even as he said the group will eventually agree on a single presidential candidate.
Gachagua made the remarks on Sunday, September 27, during an engagement with Kenyans living in Dallas, Texas, where he spoke about the opposition’s efforts to unite ahead of the next election.
The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader said his prediction was based on his experience and understanding of Kenya’s political landscape.
Gachagua Predicts Opposition Split
Gachagua said the opposition principals would eventually announce one presidential candidate but suggested that the process would also result in one of the leaders walking away.
“I want to prophesy today, not because I am a prophet, but based on experience, foresight and understanding of the Kenyan political scene that history would repeat itself,” he said.
“One single presidential candidate will be announced, one person will go away, and that person will go away on his own,” he added.
Gachagua did not identify which principal he expected to leave the coalition.
Gachagua Says He Will Stay
The former Deputy President said he would not be the principal who leaves the opposition arrangement.
He pledged to remain in the coalition and support whichever candidate is eventually agreed upon by the principals.
“Riggy G will be part of the winning team because he will not be the fellow who will walk away,” he said.
Gachagua has previously said he is willing to support a joint opposition candidate if another leader is ultimately selected, although he has also publicly positioned himself as a contender for the presidential ticket.
Gachagua Predicts 75 Per Cent Support
Gachagua also expressed confidence that the eventual opposition candidate would secure more than 75 per cent of the vote in the 2027 presidential election.
“The single presidential candidate will be elected by over 75 percent of the Kenyan vote,” he said.
He said he would remain part of the team supporting the eventual candidate.
Opposition Principals Face Key Decision
The opposition’s efforts to settle on one presidential candidate remain central to its strategy for the 2027 election.
Gachagua has previously said the coalition would work through individual party structures after abandoning plans for a joint secretariat, following concerns he raised about alleged infiltration of the coalition.
