DP Gachagua Urges Mt Kenya Leaders to Shift Focus from Politics to Development

Date:

BARICHO, Kenya – Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on leaders from the Mt Kenya region to move away from divisive politics and prioritize development in their respective constituencies.

Speaking at the Centenary Celebrations of Our Lady of Sorrows Baricho Catholic Parish in Kirinyaga, Gachagua emphasized the need to focus on socio-economic progress rather than continuous political campaigns.

Addressing the congregation at Baricho Primary School grounds, the DP reminded leaders that the election season is over, and the next cycle is not until 2027.

“The elections are behind us. Those elected must now concentrate on their work. When the time comes, candidates will return to the people to seek support. Kenyans are aware of the political landscape and will make informed decisions at the ballot,” he said.

Gachagua’s remarks came amid growing concerns over high political activity in the Mt Kenya region.

He urged local leaders to emulate other parts of the country that have maintained political calm, stressing that development should now be the central agenda.

“We must reduce high-octane politics in Mt Kenya. Other regions are not fixated on political rivalry. Voters will decide when the time comes. Meanwhile, let’s focus on development and doing good deeds,” he added.

The Deputy President further cautioned leaders against divisive politics, encouraging them to work together for the benefit of the country.

He appealed to Kenyans to give their elected leaders the space to fulfill their mandates, while urging leaders to appreciate those who helped them along the way, regardless of political differences.

Gachagua also highlighted the role of the Church in the government’s development agenda, praising the Catholic Church for its contribution to the socio-economic well-being of the community over the past century.

“The Catholic Church has been a key partner in the country’s development. We will continue working together,” he noted.

Baricho Parish, established in 1923 under the Catholic Diocese of Murang’a, was celebrating 100 years of faith and community service.

Over the years, the parish has been instrumental in setting up schools, hospitals, and programs aimed at alleviating social challenges.

Several leaders who attended the event echoed Gachagua’s sentiments, praising his efforts to unite the region and combat social ills like illicit brews and drug abuse.

Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa applauded the Deputy President’s leadership, rejecting attempts to split the country into political camps.

“DP Gachagua is our uniting factor. We stand firmly with the Kenya Kwanza administration,” he said.

Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango added that it was time to focus on work rather than political squabbles.

“We will continue to support and work with the Deputy President. The Presidency includes both the President and the Deputy President, and respect must be accorded to both,” Murango emphasized.

Other leaders present included Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjau, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, and several Members of Parliament and County Assembly, all of whom rallied behind Gachagua’s development-first message.
