NAIROBI, Kenya— Tech billionaire Elon Musk is facing mounting legal pressure in France after authorities summoned him over a sweeping investigation into alleged misconduct on his social media platform, X.
The probe, which has rapidly expanded in scope, now spans allegations of political interference, Holocaust denial content, and the spread of AI-generated sexual deepfakes—placing Musk and his companies at the center of a growing global tech accountability debate.
Inside the French Probe: Politics, Algorithms and Criminal Allegations
The investigation, launched in January 2025 by French prosecutors, initially focused on claims that X’s algorithm may have been used to interfere in domestic politics.
However, it has since widened significantly.
Authorities are now examining whether X—and its AI chatbot Grok—played a role in disseminating Holocaust denial content and harmful synthetic media.
According to prosecutors, the case involves serious potential offences, including complicity in the possession of child sexual abuse material and denial of crimes against humanity.
Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau confirmed that Musk, alongside former X CEO Linda Yaccarino, had been summoned for voluntary questioning as part of the inquiry.
Raids, Resignations and Rising Tensions
The investigation intensified earlier this year when French authorities conducted searches at X’s Paris offices—an action the company sharply criticised as a “politicized” and “abusive judicial act.”
Musk himself dismissed the probe as a “political attack,” signaling a growing confrontation between Big Tech leadership and European regulators.
Meanwhile, Yaccarino—who led X for two years—resigned in July, adding another layer of uncertainty to the company’s leadership during a period of heightened scrutiny.
Despite the summons, French officials have made it clear that the investigation will proceed regardless of whether Musk or other executives agree to be interviewed.
Grok Under Fire: Deepfakes and Global Backlash
Beyond France, scrutiny is intensifying globally—largely driven by concerns around Grok’s capabilities.
A report by the Center for Countering Digital Hate revealed that the chatbot was capable of generating millions of sexualised images using simple prompts.
Alarmingly, the findings included thousands of images that appeared to depict minors.
This has triggered multiple international investigations.
In the UK, regulators have opened inquiries into whether X and its AI arm, xAI, violated data protection laws.
At the same time, the European Union has also launched its own probe into the creation and spread of AI-generated deepfake content.
The Bigger Picture: Tech Power vs Regulation
The case highlights a broader global shift—where governments are increasingly willing to challenge the power of major tech platforms.
For Musk, the stakes are particularly high.
What began as a single-country investigation has now evolved into a multi-front regulatory battle, touching on issues of free speech, AI ethics, user safety, and platform accountability
As France pushes ahead with its investigation, the outcome could have far-reaching implications—not just for Musk and X, but for how AI-driven platforms are governed worldwide.
With multiple jurisdictions now circling, the pressure on Big Tech to balance innovation with responsibility has never been greater.
