NAIROBI, Kenya- President William Ruto has mourned Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, describing the loss of his friend in a helicopter crash as deeply painful.
In a condolence message, Ruto remembered Chivayo for his warmth, energy and belief in Africa’s potential, and extended his sympathies to the families of everyone killed.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of my friend, Wicknell Chivayo, together with his wife, Lucy Muteke, and the other lives lost in the helicopter crash in Zimbabwe,” Ruto said.
“Their sudden departure is a painful loss to their families, friends and all who knew them.”
The couple died after a helicopter crashed in Zimbabwe’s Marondera district, southeast of Harare, on Wednesday, September 30.
State broadcaster ZBC reported their deaths, citing a family spokesperson. Zimbabwean authorities said the aircraft carried six people and indicated there were no survivors.
Ruto remembers a dear friend
The President’s tribute reflected a friendship that had extended beyond formal meetings.
“Wicknell was a dear friend whose warmth touched many people. I will remember him for his friendship, his energy and his deep conviction in the possibilities of our continent,” he said.
Chivayo had made several publicised visits to Kenya, including meetings with Ruto at State House.
In August, he and Muteke attended the traditional engagement ceremony of the President’s daughter, Charlene, at his Kilgoris residence.
During that visit, Ruto personally drove Chivayo to a helipad, a moment the businessman recorded and shared publicly.
Ruto also conveyed his condolences to Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the people of Zimbabwe.
“I convey my deepest condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives, to President Mnangagwa, the people of Zimbabwe and everyone mourning this tragic loss,” he said.
“May God grant Wicknell, Lucy and all those who perished eternal rest.”
Helicopter crashed on Wednesday evening
Zimbabwe Republic Police said the aircraft went down in Marondera Rural at about 5pm local time on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said emergency responders were attending the scene and that further information would be released.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
Authorities are yet to release a full list of those aboard in the initial reports.
