CCTV Footage Captures Moments Before Fiery Crash Near Ole Sereni

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — CCTV footage circulating online has captured the dramatic moments leading up to a fiery road crash near the Ole Sereni Interchange along Nairobi’s Southern Bypass on Saturday night.

The footage, recorded by a security camera mounted near a highway overpass marked K14+896R, shows a vehicle travelling at high speed moments before it lost control and crashed, bursting into flames upon impact.

The incident occurred shortly after 8:29 p.m. and has since sparked widespread discussion on social media, with motorists and road safety advocates expressing concern over speeding on one of Nairobi’s busiest highways.

Video footage reviewed shows several vehicles moving along the multi-lane highway beneath the overpass. A dark-coloured vehicle can be seen approaching rapidly in the inner lanes as it closes the distance on other road users.

Seconds later, the vehicle appears to lose stability before veering off its path and slamming into a roadside barrier or concrete structure on the left side of the carriageway.

The impact immediately triggered a fire, with flames engulfing the vehicle within moments. Thick smoke quickly spread across parts of the highway, creating a dramatic scene visible from a distance.

The footage shows the vehicle continuing to burn as motorists approaching the scene slow down, manoeuvre around the wreckage or continue past the flames.

Road safety organisation Road Sense Kenya (RSK) was among the first groups to report the incident.

“Terrible road traffic crash reported near Ole Sereni on the Southern Bypass,” the organisation said in a social media update.

The crash occurred near the Ole Sereni Interchange, a critical transport corridor linking Mombasa Road to western Nairobi suburbs, including Lang’ata, Ngong Road and Kikuyu.

The location sits adjacent to the well-known Ole Sereni Hotel and serves as a key route for motorists travelling between Nairobi’s central business district, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and surrounding residential areas.

Investigators are expected to review the CCTV footage and other evidence as part of efforts to establish the circumstances that led to the collision.

The incident has renewed concerns over speeding and reckless driving on major highways, particularly along high-speed sections of the Southern Bypass, which has witnessed several serious crashes in recent years.

Road safety experts have repeatedly urged motorists to observe speed limits, maintain safe following distances and exercise caution, especially during night-time travel.
