NAIROBI, Kenya — A Kibera court has issued a warrant of arrest against former National Economic Development Party (NEDP) Executive Director Daniel Mokua Onsomu after he repeatedly failed to appear in court to answer fraud charges involving more than Sh2 million.
Court records show that Onsomu has not attended proceedings since June 11, 2026, prompting the court to issue an arrest warrant. A second warrant was issued on June 24 after he again failed to appear before the Kibera Chief Magistrate’s Court.
The former party official is facing charges of obtaining Sh2.05 million by false pretences from complainant Daniel Nyakundi Osiemo between September 8 and October 6, 2022.
According to prosecutors, Onsomu allegedly received the money while falsely claiming that he was in a position to assist Osiemo in obtaining information relating to a parcel of land.
The prosecution contends that the representation was fraudulent and that the accused knew it was untrue at the time he received the funds.
The latest warrant was issued after Onsomu failed to attend a scheduled court mention despite the matter being set down for a hearing.
His advocate, Mose Nyambega, had sought an adjournment through a letter dated June 22, informing the court that he was unable to attend proceedings after sustaining a knee injury in an accident.
“I am presently unable to walk and am therefore unable to attend court and effectively conduct the proceedings,” Nyambega wrote in his application.
Despite the request, the court directed the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Lang’ata Police Station to trace, arrest, and produce Onsomu before the court.
The Kibera case adds to a series of legal challenges facing the former NEDP official.
In 2022, Onsomu was charged before a Makadara court over separate allegations of obtaining money by false pretences from individuals seeking political opportunities and public sector employment.
In one of the cases, prosecutors alleged that he obtained Sh120,000 from MCA aspirant Ruth Kemunto after falsely promising to secure her a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nomination ticket ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He was also accused of obtaining Sh137,000 from Sophia Gacheri by claiming he could facilitate her recruitment into the National Police Service.
Onsomu denied the charges in the Makadara case and was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000 pending trial.
His name previously surfaced in a political controversy involving former Nairobi Governor and NEDP party leader Mike Sonko, who suspended some party activities following allegations that certain officials were soliciting money from aspirants seeking political opportunities through the party.
The latest court action now raises fresh questions about the former party official’s whereabouts as authorities move to execute the arrest warrant.
The matter is scheduled for mention on July 23, when the court is expected to receive a progress report from police on efforts to locate and apprehend the accused.
