Governor Wanga Questions Police Response to Threats Against Slain Kasipul MP Were

Date:

KASIPUL, Kenya – Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has expressed concerns over an alleged orchestrated disinformation campaign aimed at misleading the public about the murder of Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were.

Speaking during a visit to the late MP’s home, Wanga accused a wave of social media misinformation of diverting attention from the investigation into Were’s killing.

“This disinformation is not by coincidence,” Wanga declared. “It appears to be well-organized and mobilized, possibly even funded, with the aim of distracting from the true facts surrounding Were’s murder.”

Wanga stopped short of naming any specific individuals or groups behind the effort.

The governor also revealed that Were had raised alarm over threats to his life, sharing his concerns with law enforcement officials on several occasions.

“Were said multiple times that his life was in danger. I understand he even wrote directly to the Inspector General of Police. We need to know what actions were taken in response to his fears,” Wanga said, emphasizing the need for accountability.

Wanga’s frustration was profound as she demanded clarity, stating, “We will not take this lying down. We have lost one too many. Were was killed like an animal and humiliated like a criminal. He never harmed anyone. We don’t want excuses or cover-ups.”

On Friday, the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that they had made significant progress in the case, narrowing down potential suspects.

The DCI announced that the investigation had revealed crucial leads, though the motive for the crime remains under scrutiny.

“This detailed analysis has led to significant leads and helped us narrow down potential suspects. While the motive is still being investigated, preliminary findings suggest that the murder was targeted and premeditated,” the DCI stated.

The tragic incident occurred on April 30 when Were was shot dead by unknown assailants on a motorcycle near the City Mortuary roundabout in Nairobi at around 7:30 p.m.

The MP had previously expressed concern about being followed, even requesting protection from security agencies, making his murder all the more chilling in hindsight.

The National Police Service has since described the shooting as a “targeted and predetermined” act, reinforcing the suspicion that the MP was specifically targeted for reasons still to be determined.
