NAIROBI, Kenya — Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has intensified efforts to position himself as the Opposition’s preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election, unveiling a 13-point policy agenda even as internal competition over leadership and candidate selection continues to test unity among anti-government forces.
The Wiper Party leader has been actively courting fellow Opposition figures, arguing that his decades of political experience, national profile and track record in public service make him the strongest contender to challenge President William Ruto.
The policy framework, which Kalonzo has published online, outlines his vision for governance, economic recovery, and institutional reforms, while seeking to rally support behind what he describes as a movement anchored on constitutionalism, accountability, and inclusive development.
“This is a comprehensive policy framework anchored on the restoration of good governance, the rule of law and constitutionalism, charting a clear path toward a secure, productive and inclusive Kenya,” Kalonzo said.
Governance and Anti-Corruption at the Centre
A key pillar of Kalonzo’s agenda is the protection of civil liberties, human rights and democratic freedoms. He has pledged to strengthen constitutional institutions and promote a culture of tolerance and respect for divergent political views.
The former Vice President also placed the fight against corruption at the heart of his campaign platform, promising a comprehensive audit of public programmes, recovery of stolen public resources and stricter accountability measures across government.
Under the banner of “Komesha Ufisadi,” Kalonzo said recovered public funds would be redirected toward development projects and social programmes aimed at improving citizens’ welfare.
On the economy, he pledged to address the high cost of living through tax relief on essential goods and services, job creation initiatives and policies designed to boost household incomes.
Opposition Unity Faces New Tests
While Kalonzo has emerged as one of the most visible contenders within the Opposition, consensus on a single presidential candidate remains elusive.
Opposition leaders broadly agree that unity will be critical if they hope to mount a serious challenge against Ruto in 2027. However, disagreements over leadership, coalition structures and candidate selection are exposing deep divisions beneath the public calls for solidarity.
The latest fault line emerged after Martha Karua proposed that the Opposition select its presidential flagbearer through scientific opinion polling.
The proposal has reportedly found support among allies of Fred Matiang’i, who is also widely viewed as a potential presidential contender.
However, camps aligned to Kalonzo and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua are understood to favour a negotiated political settlement based on regional voting strength, coalition bargaining and consensus-building.
Emerging Camps Complicate Coalition Talks
Further complicating the political landscape is the emergence of the Linda Mwananchi movement associated with Edwin Sifuna, James Orengo and sections of leaders linked to ODM, Wiper and allied parties.
Although leaders from both camps continue to publicly affirm their commitment to working together, insiders acknowledge that no formal coalition framework has been established to manage competing ambitions and ideological differences.
Political analysts warn that the absence of clear structures could undermine efforts to build a cohesive Opposition front ahead of the next election.
Kituyi Warns Against Fragmentation
In one of the clearest acknowledgements of the alliance’s internal challenges, Mukhisa Kituyi warned that personal ambition and weak organisational structures could derail the movement.
“There’s growing public pressure that nobody should walk away from the table,” Kituyi said.
However, he cautioned that the coalition had yet to develop sufficient mechanisms to maintain unity.
“There is insufficient development of the mechanics of keeping everybody at the table,” he added.
