Mwaura Raises Concern Over Rising School Unrest, Calls for Collective Response

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura has raised concern over a growing wave of student unrest across the country, warning that recent school strikes point to deeper social challenges that require urgent intervention from parents, teachers, policymakers, and communities.

In a statement on Monday, Mwaura said incidents of arson, violence, destruction of school property, and disruption of learning have become increasingly common, threatening gains made in Kenya’s education sector.

“A growing wave of student unrest across the country has triggered fresh concern about discipline and the welfare of learners,” Mwaura said.

“Recent school strikes point to deeper social challenges that require urgent intervention from parents, teachers, and the wider community.”

Concern over rising indiscipline

The government spokesman noted that schools should remain safe spaces where learners can pursue their education without fear, insecurity, or disruptions.

He warned that increasing incidents of unrest raise questions about the values, guidance, and support systems available to young people.

“Incidents of arson, violence, and destruction of school facilities have become increasingly concerning, raising questions about the values and support systems available to young people,” he said.

According to Mwaura, the unrest extends beyond the education sector and reflects broader societal pressures affecting families and communities.

Parents urged to play a greater role

Mwaura called on parents to take a more active role in shaping the character and behaviour of their children, arguing that while teachers and school administrators play an important role in nurturing learners, discipline and responsibility are primarily cultivated at home.

He encouraged parents to spend more time engaging with their children, monitoring their activities, and understanding the challenges they face, particularly during adolescence.

The spokesman emphasized that strong family support remains critical in helping young people navigate social and emotional pressures.

Social challenges affecting learners

Mwaura identified substance abuse, peer pressure, social media influence, and weakening family structures as some of the factors contributing to behavioural challenges among students.

He cautioned that without deliberate efforts to strengthen mentorship and guidance programmes, the country risks a continued decline in discipline and social values among young people.

The remarks come amid renewed concern over cases of school fires, student protests, and violent incidents reported in learning institutions in different parts of the country.

Call for national conversation

Mwaura urged stakeholders to initiate a broader national conversation on the values shaping Kenya’s next generation.

He called on religious leaders, educators, parents, community leaders, and policymakers to work together to instil integrity, accountability, patriotism, and respect among learners.

“The rise in indiscipline, violence and moral decay should serve as a wake-up call,” he said.

He stressed that addressing school unrest requires more than disciplinary action, arguing that sustainable solutions must focus on mentorship, character development, and life skills.

Focus on youth mentorship and mental health

The government spokesman also expressed concern about rising cases of youth violence, saying recent incidents involving young people underscore the need for stronger mentorship programmes and mental health support systems.

He called for increased investment in guidance and counselling services in schools and communities, noting that unresolved social pressures and negative influences can contribute to risky behaviour among adolescents.

Mwaura maintained that the government remains committed to supporting initiatives aimed at safeguarding learners and ensuring a stable environment for teaching and learning, while urging all sectors of society to play a role in nurturing responsible and productive citizens.
