Kenya, Egypt Deepen Naval Cooperation Through Defence and Shipbuilding Partnership

Date:

CAIRO, Egypt- Kenya and Egypt have strengthened their strategic maritime partnership through expanded defence cooperation focused on naval modernisation, shipbuilding, military training, and regional maritime security.

The growing collaboration was reinforced during an official visit to Egypt by Paul Otieno between May 4 and May 6, 2026, where he held high-level engagements with senior Egyptian naval leadership.

During bilateral talks at the Egyptian Navy Headquarters, Major General Otieno met Mahmoud Adel Fawzy to discuss expanding cooperation in maritime security, military manufacturing, shipbuilding, and professional military education.

The discussions highlighted the increasing importance of defence diplomacy and strategic partnerships in enhancing naval readiness and safeguarding regional maritime interests.

A major focus of the visit was strengthening cooperation between Kenya Shipyards Limited and the Alexandria Shipyard Company.

At the Alexandria Shipyard, Major General Otieno held discussions with Hossam Kotb on joint shipbuilding initiatives, technology transfer, and workforce development programmes aimed at boosting Kenya’s domestic maritime manufacturing capabilities.

The talks also explored opportunities for industrial collaboration and localised defence production as Kenya seeks to strengthen self-reliance in maritime infrastructure and naval support systems.

Egyptian officials additionally showcased locally developed inflatable boat production technologies, demonstrating the country’s expanding indigenous defence manufacturing sector and opening the possibility for future production partnerships with Kenya.

The visit extended beyond shipbuilding into specialised naval support services and training.

At the Egyptian Navy Hospital and Diving Medicine Centre, Major General Otieno met Hisham El Tobgy to discuss collaboration in diving medicine, specialised medical training, naval health support, and underwater operations.

The Kenyan delegation also toured the Egyptian Naval Academy, where officials observed advanced naval training infrastructure designed to prepare future military leaders.

A visit to Egypt’s Special Forces Brigade provided additional exposure to specialised operational capabilities, elite maritime security training, and advanced military equipment.

The engagements underscored the expanding defence ties between Nairobi and Cairo at a time when countries across Africa are increasing military cooperation to address evolving maritime and regional security threats.

Kenya has in recent years intensified efforts to modernise the Kenya Navy and expand domestic maritime industries as part of broader national security and blue economy strategies.

Analysts say collaboration with Egypt — one of Africa’s most advanced military and shipbuilding powers — could significantly enhance Kenya’s naval capabilities, technical expertise, and industrial capacity.

The partnership also reflects a wider continental trend toward strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing and reducing dependence on imported military systems.

Both Kenya and Egypt reiterated their commitment to promoting regional maritime stability, operational readiness, and collective security through sustained defence cooperation and strategic military partnerships.
