NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with the European Union on digital standardisation as part of efforts to accelerate the country’s digital transformation agenda and build secure, interoperable digital systems.
The commitment was made during a meeting between Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications Stephen Isaboke, Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy Eng. John Tanui, and a delegation from the European Union-funded Global Gateway ICT Standards (GIST) Project.
The discussions focused on expanding collaboration in the development and adoption of internationally recognised digital standards to support Kenya’s growing digital economy.
Focus on AI, cybersecurity and digital identity
During the meeting, the two sides explored cooperation in several priority areas, including artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, digital identity, interoperability, broadband infrastructure and digital governance.
The discussions are expected to support the implementation of Kenya’s Digital Superhighway initiative and other flagship government programmes aimed at expanding internet connectivity, improving public service delivery and driving economic growth through technology.
The Principal Secretaries observed that internationally recognised ICT standards are essential for developing secure, trusted and interoperable digital systems capable of supporting innovation and digital inclusion.
Boosting innovation and competitiveness
The officials noted that adopting global digital standards would enhance Kenya’s ability to develop innovative technology solutions while improving interoperability across digital platforms.
They added that alignment with international standards would facilitate cross-border digital services and strengthen the competitiveness of Kenyan digital products in regional and global markets.
The meeting also underscored the importance of knowledge exchange, technical capacity building and the adoption of international best practices in digital standardisation.
Commitment to long-term digital partnership
Kenya and the European Union reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation in support of standards-driven digital innovation and resilient digital infrastructure.
The partnership is expected to contribute to the country’s broader digital transformation agenda while reinforcing Kenya’s position as a regional leader in digital innovation and technology-driven development.
Officials said continued collaboration would help create a secure and inclusive digital ecosystem capable of supporting sustainable economic growth and improved service delivery.
