Kenyan basketball star Madina Okot has officially entered the global spotlight after being selected 13th overall by the Atlanta Dream in the 2026 WNBA Draft. She secures a four-year rookie deal valued at approximately $1.3 million.
Okot’s selection places her among the first wave of players benefiting from the league’s newly ratified 2026 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which has significantly improved salaries, benefits, and long-term earning potential for athletes entering the WNBA.
As a first-round pick at No. 13, Okot’s contract guarantees both stability and progressive salary growth over her rookie years.
- 2026 (Year 1): $289,133 (Sh 37.4 million)
- 2027 (Year 2): $300,698
- 2028 (Year 3): $330,768
- 2029 (Year 4): $373,768 (Sh 48.4 million)
Her first-year salary is fully guaranteed, reflecting one of the most significant changes under the new CBA, which ensures all first-round picks receive protected rookie contracts from day one.
Over the full term, Okot’s deal totals approximately $1.3 million, a figure that underscores the league’s growing financial strength and its increasing competitiveness in global women’s sport.
One of the most transformative changes in the 2026 CBA is the introduction of enhanced revenue sharing between players and the league.
Players will now receive 20% of gross league and team revenue, a substantial increase from the previous 9.3%. This shift directly links player earnings to the commercial success of the WNBA, including broadcast deals, sponsorship growth, and global expansion.
For rising stars like Okot, this means future earnings could grow significantly beyond rookie contracts if league revenues continue to rise.
Okot also stands to benefit from a new mechanism known as the Exceptional Performance on Initial Contract (EPIC) clause.
Under this rule, players who deliver elite performances early in their careers (such as earning MVP honors or All-WNBA selections) can renegotiate their rookie deals into maximum or supermax contracts as early as their fourth season.
The provision is designed to accelerate earning potential for standout athletes, reducing the traditional waiting period for major contract upgrades.
Okot’s arrival in Atlanta also comes with a package of upgraded player benefits that reflect a broader shift in how the league supports athletes.
The Atlanta Dream is required to provide fully guaranteed housing for players through 2028, ensuring financial and logistical stability off the court.
Travel conditions have also been transformed, with full charter flights for all teams now mandatory, eliminating the fatigue and unpredictability of commercial travel.
In addition, the league has strengthened its investment in player welfare, including:
- Expanded medical and mental health services
- On-site performance and recovery staff
- Enhanced family planning and childcare support for traveling athletes
These reforms are part of a wider push to professionalize the league at the highest global standards.
Okot is expected to report to the Atlanta Dream training camp on April 19, 2026, ahead of the season opener scheduled for May 17.
