NAIROBI, Kenya — Senior Counsel and political leader Martha Karua is returning to Kenya after being detained and denied entry into Uganda by authorities in Kampala.
In an update issued on Monday, Karua’s team confirmed that she had departed from Entebbe International Airport and was en route to Nairobi following her release.
The statement indicated that Karua would address members of the media upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where a press briefing has been scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
According to the communication, the briefing will focus on the circumstances surrounding her detention, denial of entry, and subsequent departure from Uganda.
Questions Over Regional Freedoms
Karua’s team said the incident raises broader concerns regarding the observance of the rule of law and democratic freedoms within the East African region.
“The incident raises serious questions about the observance of the rule of law and the state of democratic freedoms within the East African Community,” the statement said.
The development follows earlier reports that Karua had travelled to Uganda in connection with legal and political engagements involving Ugandan opposition figures.
Regional Attention
The incident has attracted attention across the region due to Karua’s prominence as a senior advocate and former Kenyan Justice Minister.
Her reported denial of entry comes amid ongoing scrutiny of political and legal developments in Uganda, particularly matters involving opposition leaders and their legal representation.
At the time of publication, Ugandan authorities had not publicly detailed the reasons for denying Karua entry into the country.
Further details are expected to emerge following her scheduled press briefing in Nairobi.
