NAIROBI, Kenya – The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Executive Committee (NEC) has once again resolved to remove Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from the position of Secretary-General, days after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) faulted the party’s earlier attempt to oust him over procedural irregularities.
In a fresh resolution on Monday, the party said it had addressed concerns raised by the tribunal by according Sifuna an opportunity to respond before arriving at its decision.
According to ODM, the NEC considered the issues highlighted by the PPDT and ensured due process was followed before resolving to remove the senator from the influential party position.
The move marks the latest chapter in a months-long standoff between Sifuna and sections of ODM’s leadership over the direction of the party and his conduct as Secretary-General.
Last week, the PPDT ruled that ODM had violated Sifuna’s right to a fair hearing when it initially removed him from office.
The tribunal found that the National Executive Committee had failed to give him adequate notice that his conduct would be discussed and had not afforded him an opportunity to defend himself before the resolution was passed.
The tribunal, however, stopped short of permanently barring ODM from pursuing disciplinary action against Sifuna, indicating that the party remained free to initiate a fresh process provided it complied with its constitution and the principles of natural justice.
ODM first resolved to remove Sifuna from the Secretary-General position in February, citing concerns over leadership conduct and discipline. The decision triggered a legal battle that has played out before the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal for several months.
The latest NEC decision is expected to reignite the dispute, with attention now shifting to whether Sifuna will challenge the fresh resolution before the tribunal or in court.
Sifuna, one of ODM’s most visible national figures and a vocal critic of the Kenya Kwanza administration, had maintained that the previous process was unlawful and politically motivated.
The renewed attempt to remove Sifuna is likely to deepen tensions within ODM at a time when the party continues to navigate internal realignments and debates over its political future ahead of the 2027 General Election.
