New Chapter: Kisumu County Gov’t Unveils Material Recovery Facility to Boost Waste Management

Date:

KISUMU, Kenya -The County Government of Kisumu has announced a groundbreaking development in the battle against plastic pollution and waste management.

This new development is the opening of the county’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Kondele Ward, Kisumu Central Sub-County, which was made possible by a project funded by the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) and realised a collaborative vision.

The facility is one of six satellite MRFs created by FLLoCA that not only demonstrate sustainable waste management but also act as a model for environmental stewardship and community empowerment.

Three well-equipped segregation units support the facility’s operations by guaranteeing the safe and effective processing of collected garbage.

According to the devolved unit, the new model MRF can process 400 tonnes or more of mixed dry household garbage per year. The County’s goal of reducing plastic from ending up in lakes and encouraging respectful waste management techniques in the local communities is greatly advanced by this project.

How Gasia Poa Waste Management Services LTD will utilise the new facility

The MRF has a significant social impact in addition to environmental benefits since it aims to provide communities with appropriate waste management services and jobs. Notably, Gasia Poa Waste Management Services LTD is an experienced organisation that will supervise facility management because self-help organisations and individuals will handle collection operations, create vital job opportunities, and promote community development.

According to manager Dickens Ochieng, the Gasia Poa waste management services will work closely with local schools, such as Manyata, Kosawo, and Obinju Primary Schools.

“Additionally, we shall also supply hand carts and garbage bins to make waste collection easier throughout the neighbourhood,” explained Ochieng.

Which assurance did the Kisumu County government give to the residents

In line with the County’s goal of a setting where all household waste is handled in a dignified and equitable manner, Judith Oluoch, the CEC member for Water, Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources, gave the community assurances during the launch that this MRF will function as a replicable satellite model for sustainable waste management and that plans are in motion to extend this blueprint to other Kisumu communities.

“The facility invests in community interaction and upholds the greatest social standards. Additionally, Gasia Poa garbage Management Services Ltd. would provide accountability and openness in the collection and processing of garbage,” said Oluoch.

The CEC member also underscored that the Kondele MRF’s launch is a major step forward in the fight against waste management and the progress of sustainable development, adding that the initiative aims to grow in tandem with our amazing community.

Oluoch further extended an invitation to communities, stakeholders, and environmentalists to participate in this revolutionary path towards a cleaner, more sustainable Kisumu in the future.
