Police Recover 784 Rolls of Cannabis in Kieni East Crackdown

Date:

NYERI, Kenya — Police in Nyeri County have intensified the crackdown on narcotics after recovering 784 rolls of cannabis sativa and arresting multiple suspects in a targeted operation in Kieni East Sub-County.

The raid was conducted by officers from Gakawa Police Station following a tip-off from a member of the public about suspected drug sales at Ichuga Trading Centre.

The National Police Service said officers first searched a shop suspected of selling cannabis, where they recovered 92 rolls concealed inside a chocolate packet hidden under the counter.

Two suspects were arrested at the scene, including the shop owner.

Suspect leads police to second hideout

During interrogation, the shop owner allegedly led officers to his rented house, where another suspect was found preparing cannabis rolls for distribution.

A further search of the premises led to the recovery of an additional 692 rolls of cannabis sativa, bringing the total to 784 rolls.

Raw cannabis also recovered

Police also seized approximately 21 kilograms of unprocessed cannabis sativa from the house.

In addition, officers recovered five mobile phones suspected to have been used in drug transactions, along with assorted rolling equipment believed to be used in packaging the narcotics.

The National Police Service said the suspects remain in custody and will be arraigned in court upon completion of investigations.

Ongoing anti-narcotics campaign

Authorities said the operation is part of an ongoing nationwide crackdown targeting drug distribution networks at the sub-county level and beyond.

Police have increasingly relied on intelligence from members of the public to dismantle local drug supply chains operating in residential and trading centres.

Community vigilance urged

Security agencies have urged residents to continue reporting suspicious activities as part of efforts to curb narcotics abuse and distribution.

The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to sustained enforcement actions aimed at reducing the spread of illegal drugs across the country.

Investigations into the source and wider network behind the seized narcotics are ongoing.
