Red Cross Confirms No Casualties After Southlands Fire in Lang'ata

NAIROBI, Kenya – Emergency crews have successfully brought under control a fire that swept through the Southlands area of Lang’ata in Nairobi, with the Kenya Red Cross confirming that the incident caused no deaths or injuries.

In an update released on Wednesday morning, July 15, 2026, after firefighters extinguished the blaze, the humanitarian agency announced that the next priority would be evaluating the level of destruction left behind.

“The fire has been contained. No casualties or fatalities have been reported. Damage assessment to be conducted,” the Kenya Red Cross said in an update issued via X.

The statement followed hours of emergency operations after a large fire broke out in Southlands, producing thick black smoke that was visible from a distance and triggering a coordinated response from multiple agencies.

According to eyewitnesses, the flames spread quickly across sections of Southlands Village in Mugumoini Ward, consuming several buildings. Photos and videos posted online showed intense flames as firefighters and rescue teams arrived to contain the situation.

Some residents reported hearing loud explosions while the fire was raging, although officials had not verified the source by the time the blaze was extinguished. Others said children and vulnerable residents were safely evacuated from nearby homes as emergency teams worked to stop the flames from spreading further.

The Nairobi City County Fire Brigade, the Kenya Red Cross and other emergency responders remained at the scene for several hours before bringing the situation under control.

With the immediate threat eliminated, authorities are preparing to assess the number of affected structures and estimate the value of property destroyed. Investigators are also expected to determine what sparked the fire after the area has been secured.

The Kenya Red Cross has not indicated whether any families were displaced, although humanitarian teams are expected to evaluate the need for emergency support.

The Southlands fire adds to a series of recent blazes in Nairobi that have heightened concerns over fire safety. Experts continue to attribute many such incidents to overcrowding, unsafe electrical connections, highly flammable construction materials and limited access for firefighting vehicles.
