NAIROBI, Kenya — President William Ruto has awarded Gor Mahia FC a Sh10 million cash bonus and pledged individual rewards to players following the club’s historic 22nd FKF Premier League title.
The announcement was made on Saturday during a trophy presentation ceremony at State House, Nairobi, where players, club officials, and political leaders gathered to celebrate the club’s latest domestic league success.
In addition to the club grant, President Ruto pledged Sh100,000 to each player in the championship-winning squad.
“I personally will give each player in this room before we head for lunch Sh100,000,” the President said.
“I will also send KSh10 million to your club accounts so that you can also sort other things.”
Leaders Join in Rewarding Champions
The celebrations attracted several leaders who also contributed financial rewards to the club.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi pledged Sh3.2 million, with the funds expected to benefit both players and club management.
Former Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo, who serves as the club’s patron, donated Sh1 million during a celebratory luncheon in honour of the champions.
Gladys Wanga also contributed funds during the festivities, further increasing the financial rewards received by the club.
Club Pushes for Stadium Upgrades
Beyond the celebrations, Gor Mahia officials used the occasion to highlight the need for improved sports infrastructure, particularly the renovation of Nyayo National Stadium, one of the country’s key football venues.
The stadium is currently undergoing upgrades, including the installation of a canopy, as Kenya prepares to host major continental football events in the coming years.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya recently indicated that ongoing works are expected to be completed before the tournament handover deadlines.
Ruto Promises 28 Stadiums Nationwide
Responding to concerns over sports facilities, President Ruto said his administration intends to complete the construction or renovation of 28 stadiums across the country by the end of next year.
He said the facilities would be distributed nationwide and equipped with modern amenities aimed at improving sports development and event hosting capacity.
“My administration has plans to complete 28 stadiums in all parts of the country by the end of next year,” Ruto said.
According to the President, the facilities will include gyms, conference halls, hospitality suites, medical facilities, media centres, changing rooms, and other modern sporting infrastructure.
Symbolic Gesture Caps Celebrations
In a show of appreciation, Gor Mahia officials presented President Ruto with a signed club jersey during the State House ceremony.
The club’s latest title extends its status as the most successful team in Kenyan football history and secures another milestone in a season that saw K’Ogalo once again dominate the domestic league.
The celebrations also highlighted growing calls for increased investment in sports infrastructure and athlete development as Kenya seeks to strengthen its position as a regional sporting powerhouse.
