Sebastian Sawe Receives Hero’s Welcome at JKIA After Historic Sub-Two Marathon Record

Date:

Kenya celebrated one of its greatest sporting moments on Wednesday night, April 29, 2026, as marathon sensation Sebastian Sawe returned home to a hero’s welcome at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) after rewriting athletics history in London.

The triumphant distance runner arrived aboard Kenya Airways flight KQ 113 at approximately 8:35 PM, where jubilant fans, government officials, athletics leaders, and airport staff gathered to receive the man who stunned the world days earlier.

Sawe’s arrival became an unforgettable scene when his aircraft received a ceremonial water cannon salute after landing, a rare honour reserved for special achievements and distinguished arrivals.

The reception came after Sawe produced one of the greatest performances ever seen in long-distance running.

At the 2026 London Marathon, the Kenyan star clocked an astonishing 1:59:30, becoming the first man to run a sub-two-hour marathon in an official race.

For years, athletes, coaches, and scientists viewed the two-hour barrier as one of sport’s final impossible frontiers under standard race conditions. Sawe changed that narrative with a composed, relentless, and perfectly executed race in London.

His time not only won the race but also shattered the previous world record and elevated him into global sporting immortality.

As soon as the Kenya Airways Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner touched down, the mood at JKIA shifted into celebration mode. Supporters waved Kenyan flags, chanted Sawe’s name, and applauded the champion as he stepped back onto home soil.

Traditional dancers and well-wishers added colour and excitement to the late-night reception, while photographers and media crews rushed to capture the moment.

The airport, often busy with travelers and arrivals, transformed into a stage for national pride as Kenyans celebrated another athlete who had carried the country’s flag high on the global stage.

Senior government and athletics officials led the homecoming ceremony.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya attended the reception and praised Sawe’s remarkable discipline, resilience, and dedication. He described the achievement as a source of inspiration for young athletes across Kenya.

Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei also welcomed Sawe and congratulated him for delivering one of the most iconic performances in the sport’s history.

Officials hailed the athlete for proving that Kenya remains the global powerhouse of distance running.

While Sawe remained the center of attention, he did not travel alone. He returned with training partners, support staff, and members of the Kenyan marathon delegation who had accompanied the team to London.

Coaches, technical staff, and Athletics Kenya officials who helped coordinate preparations for London also returned with the new world record holder.
