The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has scheduled party primaries for Friday, May 8, to select its candidate for the upcoming Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
In a notice signed by National Elections Board chairman Anthony Mwaura, aspirants are required to apply through the party’s online nomination portal.
“Notice is hereby given that the party nomination exercise for Ol Kalou Constituency in Nyandarua County shall be held on Friday, May 8, 2026,” the notice read.
Notably, all aspirants are expected to first register on the UDA portal.
After registration, candidates will be required to pay nomination fees via an integrated M-Pesa STK push system. UDA has set the fee at Sh250,000 for general aspirants, while women, youth, and persons with disabilities will pay a reduced fee of Sh125,000.
The party has also stated that the fees are non-refundable.
The party further reminded public officers interested in contesting that they must resign by April 30 to comply with electoral laws.
The Ol Kalou seat fell vacant following the death of MP David Njuguna Kiaraho on March 29, 2026, triggering preparations for a by-election in a constituency considered a key political battleground in Nyandarua County.
In a Gazette Notice, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Erastus Ethekon confirmed that the by-election will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2026. “Following the declaration of vacancies that occurred in the office of Member of the National Assembly for Ol Kalou Constituency, Nyandarua County, by the Speaker, there shall be a by-election on Thursday, July 16, 2026,” the notice stated.
Ethekon also directed political parties intending to participate in the poll to submit their aspirants and primaries timetable by May 4.
“Each political party intending to participate in the by-election shall submit the names of the persons contesting in a party primary and the date of the party primary on or before Monday, May 4, 2026,” he said.
On April 20, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula formally declared the Ol Kalou seat vacant following Kiaraho’s death, in line with constitutional provisions.
The declaration marked the official start of the electoral process, with the IEBC expected to oversee the by-election within 90 days as required by law.
