The family of former Matungu MP David Were is mourning yet another tragedy after the killing of his son, Hannington Were, barely four months after the loss of another child under unclear circumstances.
In an emotional appeal, the former legislator’s wife questioned why her family continued to lose children in what she described as mysterious and painful circumstances, saying fear and grief had now engulfed their household.
“Why are they killing my children? What have we done? Can we be told to repay them instead so that they can be at peace? Right now, as I walk, I’m scared because I don’t know who is behind my children and me. We don’t know why our children have died. Our two sons have died. One was 41 years, one month and twenty-seven days, the other one is 39 years and five months. Just like that, they are gone with no reason we can explain,” she said.
The grieving mother said the deaths had devastated the entire family, particularly the widows left behind struggling to understand the sudden loss of their husbands.
“We are just woken up in the middle of the night to learn that they have been killed. Their wives are crying, they can’t find reasons why their husbands have died,” she said.
She also expressed frustration over the lack of answers from investigators despite reporting the matter to the police.
“I went to the police station, and they visited the scene of the crime. No one is giving us answers on what exactly happened. He was just in the house when he left. The next thing we hear is that he has been killed. Honestly, who have we wronged?”
The latest tragedy follows the killing of 39-year-old Hannington Were, who was attacked by suspected criminals near Wayside Junction along Nyerere Road in Kisumu during the early hours of Sunday morning.
According to reports filed at Obunga Police Station, Hannington had been walking with a friend towards Mamba Hotel to buy food when they were ambushed near Makini School.
Former MP David Were said the attackers, believed to be boda boda riders, stabbed his son twice in the back before striking him on the head with a metal rod.
Hannington, who worked as a compliance officer at the National Social Security Fund, was rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital alongside his injured friend. However, doctors confirmed he was dead on arrival.
Describing his son as calm and reserved, David Were said he was unaware of any disputes involving Hannington either at work or within the community.
“His wife was already asleep. She did not know that Hannington had left. Hannington is a very private person and does not always walk at night. I do not know what prompted him to leave,” he said.
Hannington’s friend remains admitted at JOOTRH with serious injuries as police continue investigating the deadly attack.
The latest killing has intensified fear within the Were family, with the former MP’s wife saying she is now determined to protect her remaining children amid growing concerns over the unexplained deaths.
