Agoro was apprehended at a Nairobi hotel, where he had allegedly gone to collect part of the bribe.
According to the EACC, the civil society leader had demanded the sum as a “facilitation fee” to avoid publicizing accusations of procurement irregularities against the parastatal CEO.
EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi stated that Agoro had agreed to reduce the extortion amount after negotiations with the CEO, settling on Ksh. 2 million, payable in two instalments: Ksh. 1.5 million on Tuesday and the remaining Ksh. 500,000 later.
The CEO, who has not been publicly identified, reported the extortion attempt to the EACC, prompting a sting operation that led to Agoro’s arrest.
The anti-graft agency revealed that Agoro was found in possession of USD 10,800 and Ksh. 100,000, which made up the first instalment of the bribe.
Following his arrest, Agoro was detained at the EACC Integrity Centre police station as investigations into the case continue.
