22 MCAs voted for his removal, just one vote shy of the required 23, while 12 voted against the motion.
“The threshold needed to impeach the governor stands at 23 votes. Since 22 voted for the motion, the governor survives,” announced Speaker Enock Okero.
Nyaribo faced accusations of gross misconduct and violations of the Constitution, charges similar to those he had previously overcome in an impeachment attempt in October 2023.
Then, 18 MCAs voted to reject the motion, with 16 supporting it.
The latest impeachment motion, brought by nominated MCA Evans Juma Matunda, highlighted allegations of abuse of office, gross violation of the Constitution, and misconduct.
Matunda, affiliated with the Wiper party, cited issues including illegal recruitment, failure to remit statutory dues, and favoritism within the county government.
These charges echo last year’s impeachment attempt, which included 12 allegations of malpractice.
The governor has consistently denied the accusations, framing them as politically motivated attacks by his opponents.
Following his survival last year, Nyaribo claimed external forces, including political adversaries from his gubernatorial race, were behind the push to unseat him.
Despite the close call, Nyaribo’s party, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), which holds a majority in the county assembly, once again helped thwart the impeachment effort.
