Fisherman Killed in Lake Victoria Clash Over Fishing Grounds

Date:

HOMA BAY, Kenya — A 35-year-old fisherman was killed following a violent confrontation between rival fishing groups on Lake Victoria, in an incident that has renewed concern over rising tensions linked to dwindling fish stocks.

The victim, identified as Fredrick Oduol, died after he was assaulted during a clash at Mukuyu Beach in Suba Sub-county on Monday evening. The altercation reportedly erupted as fishermen competed over access to fishing grounds in the lake.

According to Suba Sub-county Beach Management Unit chairman William Onditi, two groups engaged in a physical fight while out on a fishing expedition. The violence broke out after one group accused Oduol and his colleagues of encroaching into waters they claimed were not designated for them.

“Oduol was struck with a paddle during the confrontation, sustaining serious injuries,” Onditi said. He was rushed to Mikuyu Health Centre but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

The incident highlights growing friction among fishing communities around Lake Victoria, where declining fish stocks have intensified competition for limited resources.

Onditi attributed the conflict to reduced fish populations, linking the trend to illegal fishing practices that deplete breeding stocks and destroy immature fish. “The pressure on available fishing grounds is increasing because of unsustainable methods that reduce fish numbers,” he said.

Leaders within the Beach Management Units say such practices are fuelling disputes and undermining order in the lake’s fishing sector. Homa Bay County Beach Management Network chairman Edward Oremo warned that failure to curb illegal fishing could trigger more violence.

“Illegal fishing methods should not be allowed to continue in Lake Victoria, as they are a recipe for chaos,” Oremo said, calling for stricter enforcement of fisheries regulations.

He also urged fishing communities to diversify their livelihoods to ease pressure on the lake, noting that overdependence on fishing is worsening competition and conflict.

Lake Victoria, East Africa’s largest freshwater body, supports millions of livelihoods across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. However, it has faced persistent challenges including overfishing, pollution, and weak enforcement of fisheries laws.

Police have not yet released details on arrests linked to the incident, but investigations are ongoing.
