This collaboration, initially launched in 2020, has already impacted over 17,000 refugee children, while also supporting 40 students through the UNHCR’s DAFI scholarship program.
The initiative has not only provided educational resources but also improved teacher support and enhanced school infrastructure within refugee camps.
With the renewed partnership, TECNO is set to further expand its reach, aiming to benefit over 7,000 refugee children in Kenya by 2024, out of the 11,500 expected to enroll.
In a broader vision, UNHCR plans to enroll over 55,000 out-of-school refugee children in primary education programs within the Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps over the next four years.
While the camps host over 217,000 school-aged children, net enrollment remains at 53%, highlighting the critical need for initiatives like this.
TECNO’s renewed financial contributions will address these gaps through the provision of scholastic materials, hygiene kits for girls, infrastructure upgrades, and essential resources for both students and teachers.
Adriani Wahjanto, UNHCR Deputy Representative in China, hailed the extended partnership, stating, “UNHCR values the continued support from TECNO, which is essential for bridging gaps in education and creating opportunities for refugee children. We hope this will inspire more private sector involvement in building a brighter future for refugees.”
Jack Guo, General Manager of TECNO, reiterated the company’s commitment, emphasizing, “TECNO is dedicated to supporting local communities in Africa through impactful initiatives. Renewing our partnership with UNHCR allows us to enhance educational conditions for refugee children and invest in a sustainable tomorrow.”
