NAIROBI, Kenya — Motorists in Nairobi and its outskirts are set for further traffic disruptions after the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) announced the closure of Mlolongo-Kamulu (Quarry Road) and extended the shutdown of Eldoret Road.
The Mlolongo-Kamulu road will be closed for two months from Thursday, October 1, to Tuesday, December 1, 2026, to allow contractors to undertake construction works.
Meanwhile, the closure of a section of Eldoret Road in Nairobi has been extended by another three months, with the road now expected to reopen on December 30, 2026.
Mlolongo-Kamulu Road to Close for Two Months
KURA said the temporary closure of the Mlolongo-Kamulu (Quarry Road) will take effect on October 1 and remain in place until December 1.
The authority said the disruption is necessary to allow the contractor to carry out essential construction works along the affected section.
Traffic will be diverted to alternative routes depending on the type of vehicle.
Alternative Routes for Motorists
KURA has designated the following diversion routes:
- Syokimau-Katani Road — for light to medium vehicles.
- Syokimau-Parliament Road — for light to medium vehicles.
- Tuffoam Road — for heavy commercial vehicles.
Motorists have been advised to approach the affected areas with caution and follow traffic signs and directions from police officers and traffic marshals.
KURA said officers and marshals will be stationed along the affected corridor to help manage traffic flow.
Eldoret Road Closure Extended to December 30
The authority has also extended the closure of Eldoret Road in Nairobi after construction works on a new vehicular bridge across the Nairobi River took longer than initially planned.
The road was originally closed from May 18 to September 18, 2026, with motorists expected to regain access after more than four months.
KURA announced on September 28 that the closure would now remain in force until 6pm on Wednesday, December 30, 2026.
The extension means motorists will have to contend with the closure for an additional three months.
Delayed Materials Blamed for Eldoret Road Extension
KURA attributed the delay to unforeseen logistical and site-related challenges encountered during construction of the Nairobi River bridge.
The authority also cited delays in the delivery of critical construction materials and equipment, which it said were beyond the contractor’s control.
“The extension has become necessary due to unforeseen logistical and site-related challenges encountered during the construction of the Vehicular Bridge across the Nairobi River,” KURA said.
The authority said it was working to fast-track the remaining works and maintain the December 30 reopening target.
Motorists Advised to Use Alternative Routes
KURA has urged motorists affected by the Eldoret Road closure to continue using previously designated alternative routes.
Drivers can use parallel local roads in the Eastlands area and other major connectors to access Jogoo Road and arterial roads serving areas north and south of the closed section.
Motorists travelling through other parts of Nairobi can also use connections around Ngong Road, Mbagathi Road and Lang’ata Road, depending on their destinations.
The authority said inner connector roads could also be used to avoid the affected section.
Traffic Police to Manage Disruptions
KURA said traffic police officers and marshals will be deployed to help guide motorists and manage congestion around the affected corridors.
Motorists using the Mlolongo-Kamulu route have also been urged to follow temporary traffic signs and instructions at the construction site.
The authority apologised for the inconvenience caused by the works and asked road users to cooperate as construction continues.
With both projects running into the final months of 2026, motorists using the affected routes have been advised to allow extra travel time and plan their journeys around the designated diversions.
