DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has claimed that protesters involved in post-election violence were paid to “burn the country,” as she launched a commission of inquiry into the unrest.

President Suluhu Hassan said the inquiry aims to establish the root causes of the violence and hold responsible parties accountable.

The president urged citizens to remain calm and respect the rule of law while the commission carries out its work independently. She emphasized that Tanzania must not be allowed to descend into lawlessness following the recent polls.
