Court Sets Sh100,000 Bail for Suspects in Ruto Convoy Case

Date:

NGONG, Kenya- Forty-five people have been charged at the Ngong Law Courts after they were accused of blocking President William Ruto’s convoy and engaging in unlawful assembly during a church fundraiser in Kajiado County.

The suspects appeared before Chief Magistrate Ariba Kutwa on Monday. Five women admitted to the charges, while 40 men denied involvement and opted to contest the allegations in court.

The court released all 45 accused persons on a bond of Sh100,000 each, with an alternative cash bail of the same amount.

According to police reports presented in court, the group was transported in buses and matatus to Nkarusa in Kajiado West on Sunday. Investigators allege that upon arrival, they blocked a road used by President Ruto’s convoy as he departed after attending a fundraising event at the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church in the area.

Authorities further claim that the suspects were chanting “Wantam” slogans before police officers intervened and dispersed the gathering. The group was later arrested while reportedly preparing to leave the area.

The case has drawn attention amid heightened political activity and growing public debate around the “Wantam” slogan, which has increasingly featured in opposition political discourse ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Police indicated that investigations are continuing and have expanded beyond the 45 suspects. Detectives are reportedly pursuing leads involving a politician from Kajiado North who is alleged to have financed the group and instructed them to disrupt the event attended by the President.

Security officers reportedly prevented the group from entering the main meeting venue before the alleged road obstruction occurred.

The five women who pleaded guilty are expected back in court on June 18, 2026, when the matter will be mentioned before sentencing directions are issued.

The case involving the 40 men who denied the charges will be mentioned after 14 days as investigators complete their inquiries.

President Ruto had travelled to Kajiado West to lead a fundraiser aimed at supporting the construction of the SDA Church headquarters. The event formed part of his ongoing engagements with religious organisations and local communities.
