Fuel Price Protesters Freed on Sh3,000 Bail Each

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Ten people arrested during Nairobi protests over the rising cost of fuel were on Wednesday, April 22, released on cash bail after appearing in court, as legal proceedings begin over their participation in the demonstrations.

The accused were each granted bail of Sh3,000 by the Nairobi City Court after pleading not guilty to charges of blocking public movement and causing inconvenience within the Central Business District.

The case took a procedural turn after a lawyer holding brief for the Law Society of Kenya informed the court that two additional suspects were minors.

The magistrate directed that the pair be taken to Central Police Station for age assessment, with a report to be filed by Thursday, April 23.

According to the prosecution, the group was arrested on Tuesday while attempting to stage demonstrations in the city centre without authorisation.

Police officers, including anti-riot units, dispersed the protesters, citing concerns over disruption to business operations and public order.

Authorities further told the court that the accused obstructed pedestrians and motorists, causing inconvenience in the busy CBD.

Those charged include Julias Kamau Kimani, Elisha Ochieng, Collins Otieno Ochieng, Emmanuel Yegon, Dickson Mworia, Brian Mwenda, Jeremiah Mwau, Michael Ngige, Emmanuel Muchui, and Joshua Okayo.

The arrests come amid growing public frustration over high fuel prices and the rising cost of living, with recent protests largely mobilised through social media and often lacking central coordination.

The case will be mentioned after the court receives the age assessment report for the two minors.
