NAIROBI, Kenya- Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on journalists to uphold responsibility, objectivity and vigilance as the country moves towards the 2027 General Election.
In a message to mark World Press Freedom Day 2026, Gachagua praised members of the Fourth Estate for their role in informing, educating and shaping public discourse, often under difficult and risky conditions.
He said journalists play a critical role in telling stories that “touch humanity, save lives, protect the environment and uplift society,” adding that the country remains indebted to their sacrifice.
Call for responsible journalism
Gachagua emphasised that press freedom must go hand in hand with responsibility and objectivity, noting that a free media is central to democracy.
“The freedom of the press does not only mean the right to operate freely, but also the duty to exercise responsibility and objectivity,” he said.
He described a free press as not just a pillar of democracy, but “democracy itself.”
Reflecting on Kenya’s media landscape, the former Deputy President acknowledged the struggles journalists endured to secure press freedom over the years.
However, he warned against complacency, urging media practitioners to remain alert at a time when many Kenyans are calling for change.
“Do not let your guard down. Listen to Kenyans and tell their stories,” he said.
Focus on the 2027 elections
Gachagua further stressed the need for peace and stability as the country prepares for the August 10, 2027 General Election.
He called on the media to play a unifying role by promoting truth, accountability and national cohesion through balanced reporting.
This year’s World Press Freedom Day is marked under the theme: “Shaping a Future at Peace; Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security.”
The day is observed worldwide to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom and to honour journalists who have risked or lost their lives in the line of duty.
