NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya’s electoral roll has expanded significantly after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced that 875,501 new voters have been registered during the ongoing voter registration exercise.
According to the commission, the surge was recorded within days of the enhanced continuous voter registration programme, reflecting renewed civic participation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The data shows that urban counties are leading in registration numbers, with Nairobi topping the list, followed by Kiambu and Kakamega, highlighting strong uptake in densely populated regions.
IEBC officials say the exercise is part of a broader strategy to expand the voter base and ensure inclusive participation, especially among young people, who make up a significant share of new registrants.
The commission has previously set ambitious targets of millions of new voters in its nationwide drive.
The voter registration exercise is being conducted across constituencies, Huduma Centres, universities, and mobile registration points to improve accessibility and reach underserved populations.
Electoral officials have urged eligible Kenyans who have not registered or updated their details to take advantage of the ongoing programme.
The IEBC says it will continue updating the public on registration figures as the exercise progresses, ahead of the 2027 polls.
